ECC-2: Controversies in the Acute Assessment and Management of Trauma

Course Description:

Trauma occurs commonly in small animal patients and may vary widely in severity. In this presentation, we will discuss initial triage, assessment, and stabilization of trauma cases.  We will provide practical tips for common types of trauma.  We will also discuss some of the controversies in management including fluid types, fluid rates, use of steroids, when antibiotics are indicated, and approach to the pet with non-responsive shock.

Biographies: 

1. Laura Vega is originally from Costa Rica and that is where she completed her veterinary degree in 2018 at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica.  She completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at Oregon State University in 2018-2019.  Currently she is an Emergency and Critical Care Intern at Washington State University.  Starting this July 2020 she will be starting an Emergency and Critical Care Residency and Louisiana State University.
2. Beth Davidow joined the emergency and critical care department at Washington State University in March.  She is a graduate of Cornell University and completed her residency at Dove Lewis Emergency Hospital in Portland, OR.  She was the co-owner and medical director of 2 emergency and multispecialty hospitals and a blood bank in Seattle for 13 years.  She has been a consultant for VIN since 2002 and is president-elect of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
