Neuro 4 Course Description:
Seizures often present as “weird episodes”, with a wide range of clinical manifestations that overlap with non-seizure disorders. To help answer the eternal question of “Is this a seizure?”, EEG is an inexpensive, non-invasive diagnostic modality that is increasingly available in veterinary medicine (including at WSU!).
In addition to helping diagnose seizures, EEG allows us to isolate specific subtypes of epilepsy. Additionally, this may help guide seizure therapy as well as aid in the diagnosis of sleep and movement disorders. This course offers background on the physiology of seizures and explores various clinical applications of veterinary EEG through discussion of case examples, to highlight the utility of this diagnostic tool.

Biography:
Dr. Vishal Murthy is an Assistant Professor and a new addition to the Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Originally from Canada, he graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College and following an internship in Toronto, completed residency training in Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of California, Davis. He stayed on at UC Davis as a faculty instructor for a year before joining the WSU Neurology and Neurosurgery team. His clinical and research interests include seizure diagnosis and management, advanced neurosurgery, and the neural control of urinary continence in neurological patients. He is also interested in understanding how people learn and enjoys exploring novel ways to teach neurology.
