re: Nichole and Romeo. Otherwise referred to as Nicki and Gomer, from here on out.
There's a saying: Dog is man's best friend.
That saying itself begs the question: If dog is man's best friend, then who is DOG'S best friend?
The answer is plain to me. Let me introduce you to two of my best friends, with two of their best friends.
Dr Paul DeMaris, with Nicki the puppy. (See image at far right.)
Dr Rita Bauman and Nicki, many many years later.
Nicki: August 18, 1999 to November 30, 2013
Referred to in life as Nicki, or Nickers or Snickers...
"Snickerdoodle - you're not a poodle! You're lab-ra-doooooooor-able!"
August 12, 2000 to December 26, 2013
He started out life as Romeo: But we called him Gomer. He wasn't called Gomer because he was dull-minded or dim-witted. But because he was so sweet natured, so pure and innocent of heart. God and all of nature never created a creature like him. My sweet man...
"Go Gomer Go!" became his call phrase. I used to tell him that I'd have to get Ichiro to throw a ball for him, because he was so fast!
Nicki was born at Alpine View Veterninary Hospital, in Snohomish, Washington, by late-night emergency c-section. A surgically trained vet-tech named Nichole kept her alive, literally forced the breath of life into her. Thus - her name. Could she have been called anything else?
Gomer was born at Alpine View, but moreso - was also conceived there, by artificial insemination.
Each of them - their lives began, and ended, full-circle, at Alpine View Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish.
But please - let it be known: Dr Paul DeMaris and Dr Rita Bauman were never ever our friends.
You are forever - FAMILY.
You made each good day possible, made each good day better!
You made each bad day, those last unbearable goodbye's, almost bearable.
With love and gratitude,
Deborah S.
