A donation was made in memory of Lili by

After the death of our old dog, Reni, my husband and I decided to adopt an older dog from
German Shepherd Rescue, as we were both in our seventies. At least, such was our intention
until I saw Lili’s face on the German Shepherd Rescue website. It was love at first sight.
She was ten months old. She was named Lucky Lu because her mother had killed her siblings at birth. She was the only
survivor of the litter. Her mother began to attack her when she was six months old, after which
her owners dumped her in a night box at an Animal Shelter. Fortunately, German Shepherd
Rescue had a foster home for her and posted her for adoption. She was meant for me.
I named her Lili Marlene, after a famous German song of WWII. She was a beauty, with a thick,
lustrous coat and luminous brown eyes that could express a thousand words. She had a look I
called “the stare” – that went straight to my heart. Her keen intelligence shone in her eyes. Her
favorite game was Hide and Seek. She never failed to find the toy that I hid – sometimes in
closed drawers, underneath blankets, or in a laundry basket. I could never fool her. In her last
days she brought me toys to hide – still possessed of the puppy I fell in love with long ago.
For thirteen years, she was my consolation (after the death of my husband), my comfort, my
confidant, my companion on high mountain ridges, on road trips and runs on remote beaches.
She loved to chase sticks in the surf and in mountain lakes. Wherever we travelled, she was my
protector, with an ever-watchful eye. Over all the miles we travelled together, I always felt safe.
On May 14, 2024, Lili died peacefully, having lived a full and interesting life for almost fourteen
years. The tears I shed at her death were a small price to pay for all the joy, laughter, and love she
gave me in our thirteen years together. I will always be grateful to German Shepherd Rescue and
their volunteers for saving Lili for me.
