Gus

Our amazing boy Gus, named after the fat little mouse from Cinderella,
left us with nearly 11 years of wonderful memories that will keep him alive
in our hearts forever. We laugh at many of them and cry at others. My
favorite memory is the one where after returning home from a long day’s
work, we found that he had chewed the arm off of our borrowed couch just
days before we were set to move out of the country. Along with the newly
exposed couch frame, all of the house plants were overturned and a few throw
pillows had been “unstuffed”. I knew then that if we could survive raising
that puppy, we would make amazing human parents one day.

“Guppy” as we affectionately called him was our pick of the litter. His mom
KD is still prancing along, albeit slowly, at 14 years old. He was one of
eight beautiful puppies born on February 2, 1997 in Kitzingen, Germany. He
followed us to the frozen tundra of Fairbanks, Alaska and then onto
Anchorage. What a trooper he was to make the trip all the way to Manhattan,
KS and then finally up to Fort Lewis, WA three years ago. He kept our family
company during military field exercises and through a deployment to Iraq.
His companionship will be forever missed, but I am so happy that he is now
chasing squirrels and eating McDonald’s hamburgers anytime he wants. We
couldn’t have asked for a better pal.

I would like to thank the staff and doctors at the VCA Pacific Avenue Animal
Hospital, but especially Dr.  Scharer, for the outstanding care Gus
received. He became ill at a kennel over the holidays and the owner took him
there. Since I was out of the state and my husband out of the country, they
took a lot of time to speak to both of us regarding the care plan. When it
became apparent that we had to euthanize him, they waited for one of my dear
friends to be with him. I was able to say my good-byes on the phone and will
	never forget their compassion.
