Cody
Cody – I miss him dearly! We adopted Cody from the King County /
Seattle Humane Society in March 1993. He was 1 year old the following
month. My husband and I wanted a dog, but we didn’t really know what
we were looking for. Based on our lifestyle and such, they introduced
us to Cody. The following day, we adopted Cody. Thank You Humane
Society!
We had years of joy with him. In 1994, I started working part-time
from home, so this gave me the ability to take Cody on long walks at the
park. On weekends, we enjoyed going on hikes together in the mountains
or taking him to off-leash dog parks, such as Marymoor. In 1995, our
son was born. Cody took this all in stride and enjoyed having a little
person in our home. Likewise, I remember our son giggling as we played
with our black & white border collie. Cody also loved to play in the
snow! Walks in the snow were “like being in a candy store”. As
the years went by, we continued our daily walks in the park and later, when
my son started school, I’d also go on walks with another dear friend and her
dog. Then, four years ago, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
We slowly went from walking several miles a day with hills to flat short
distances. This worked out well for Cody, since he was getting older
and didn’t have the copious amounts of energy he once had. But being a
border collie, I felt he needed the opportunity to have as much freedom as
possible and not be held back by my slowing down with him on a leash.
I continued to take him to off-leash dog parks for that freedom.
However, being the older gentleman that he was, he mostly just loved to
sniff around and socialize with the other dogs, without becoming too
rambunctious.
In April 2008, Cody would have been sweet 16. I look back fondly at
Cody’s life and have no regrets. He tremendously enriched our lives!
With Cody no longer here, there is such a void! It’s taking some time
getting used to him not being around! However, it’s comforting to know
that one day, I’ll be seeing him at Rainbow Bridge.
