This is the story of Scooter's life:
Scooter was found under a porch with 5 other kittens, the people
that had lived in the house had moved away and abandoned the kittens
and the mother ( the mother was not with the kittens three days
after being abandoned, she was never found.)Scooter was the runt of
the litter, weighing approximately 2 lbs at four weeks of age, he
was so small, he could fit in the palm of my mom's hand. She didn't
want to adopt him because he was very sick and she already had a cat
( Jasper) who was six months old and a new baby - me, I was three
months old, but my mom adopted him because if she didn't he would
die.
Scooter was given so much love that his health had improved, when he
reached maturity he weighed in at 17 lbs. He was named Scooter
because when ever he stopped running he would "beep, beep" and
'scoot' around the house. Jasper had always drank from the tap in
the bathroom, never a bowl of water even though there was always one
around. You had to turn it on for him when he cried. He taught
Scooter to do the same thing. Our cats liked car rides, lettuce,
shrimp, pop tarts and cereal milk; not your average cats that's for
sure! For 10 years it was just me, my Mom and our 'boys' Jasper and
Scooter; we were a team; the fantastic four, we had many adventures
and we traveled across Canada together.
My Mom married 2 years ago and had 2 more girls. Jasper and Scooter
still remained 'the boys' of our family. When Scooter was getting
close to his 13th birthday, my mom noticed that Scooter wasn't
asking for a drink anymore, she picked him up and was horrified to
realize how much weight he had lost. She took him to the vet to find
out what was wrong, the prognosis was not good. Scooter's liver was
failing. She got medicine to help him get better, but it could not
save him. 10 days after he was diagnosed, Scooter died of liver
failure. He was only 12 1/2 years old.
He was my cat, our friend and we loved him. My Mom and I miss him a
lot. He was a part of our lives and he will never be replaced.
Jasper and Scooter were the best of friends to the end. Since
Scooter died Jasper's health is failing. He misses his friend and
has lost a lot of weight. He is diabetic and his heart and thyroid
are failing. The vet says that there is not much they can do. Jasper
is my Mom's best friend and it is killing her to see him this way.
She says she is torn between making the decision to have him put to
sleep and watching him deteriorate. My Mom says that there will
never be another cat in our house after Jasper dies because no other
cats could hold a place in our hearts and lives like they did and
still do...they were a part of our family and never thought of as
pets.
From March 14, 1992 - September 17, 2004 that was when his life
began and ended.
I love and miss you Scooter. Your death marked the beginning of the
end of an era for us; the fantastic four will never again be.
