I recorded music at a studio. The owner had Dory. He was moving to Hawaii and asked me to take her in 2015. She was 8 years old. She was smart and sweet. She had no guile. She was calm and gentle. She was afraid of human friends but loved other dogs. She grew to love Audrey and always wanted to be near her. She lost her hearing and had limited vision. She depended on Audrey to know what was happening. Dory passed away moments after Audrey. Audrey had a unanticipated event following a procedure and lost consciousness on the way home. I took her to the ER and Dory was with me. Dory had a seizure while we were there and the vets examined her and told me she was in heart failure. It was recommended that I put both down. Audrey had an oxygen mask on when they put her down. She wasn’t conscious and I didn’t get a proper goodbye. Dory was alert but clearly suffering. I held her face and thanked her for being my dog. It was a terrible day. I lost two dogs. My only comfort is that perhaps they were able to support one another as they crossed over. I’m so grateful I was able to parent Dory. She enriched our lives and loved Audrey.
