Bridger

Bridger, our beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, fought a short yet courageous battle against a stage III mast cell tumor. His strength, courage and stoicism in the face of cancer was commendable. Just seven weeks shy of his 8th birthday, it was hard to believe Bridger was sick. He was just as incredibly strong, lovable, and young at heart as always.

His size was intimidating, 95 pounds and just as much fur. He was a gentle giant though, his big brown eyes would warm your heart, or convince you that he needed a treat. He greeted everyone with a smile and wagging tail, such a happy, goofy, and social being. He loved attention and would sit on your feet and engage his "berner lean" to prevent you from leaving.

He absolutely loved the snow ~ running circles in the fresh powder, eating it, or just sitting in a huge snow drift until he turned white. He loved his walks too, lumbering along like a black bear. He was definitely not a water dog as he would test the waters with his paw on the beaches of Priest Lake every fall. He would much rather hike the mountainous terrain in hopes of catching one of those chattering squirrels. We shared many travels to Wyoming, always ready for the ride (although not a favorite during the hot summer months). The long distance always meant more family to love on him. He also enjoyed intimidating the deer, his presence among the Wyoming wildlife was always noted. Not to mention the bunnies, there were always so many to chase!

At home, he loved sneaking strawberries from the garden, tormenting our cats with just a tilt of his head, and licking our little girl's toes. Bridger loved being a part of the family. He was loyal, protective, and involved. He was always right in the middle of everything, joining us in a board game and sitting on the pieces, knocking over doll house accessories with a wag of the tail, plowing through a tea party, or sitting and listening to story time each and every evening. We miss him dearly, we miss walking over and around him, and hearing him lumber down the stairs.

Bridger was our dream, a dream we planned and waited for. We are so very blessed to have had such a wonderful and beautiful boy in our lives. Although independent and stubborn at times, he trusted us and did anything we asked of him, and then some. We miss him whole heartedly, a part of us is missing with his absence. If only we could stroke and kiss that white stripe upon his forehead once again. We love you, Bridger.

Comments: A year has passed since we had to say good-bye, but you are in our hearts and thought of each and every day. We miss you, our big beautiful boy! Gramma Sherri blessed our family with another Berner, Zander. Your spirit lives on as your father is his great-grandfather. We wish you were here to show this not so little guy a few things, but it appears you may have already. Your presence from heaven above continues to bless our family. Love, hugs, and kisses to our forever friend.
