Aspen - Black Lab
When my husband and I decided to get a puppy, I had no idea what I was getting into. Growing up, we had always gotten adult dogs. It was November and we went to pick a pup from the litter. Aspen was already taken by another interested party, but Aspen had other plans. She followed me everywhere! I'd pick her up and put her back in the pile with her siblings and say, "Honey, I can't have you. You already have a home." That didn't matter to Aspen! She would squirm her way out of the mix, find me, and chew on my shoe laces. Finally, the lady who had picked Aspen, changed her mind and I took her home. We were best buddies from the very beginning!
When Aspen was a puppy, my work environment was flexible so she would come to work with me. I put her create under my desk where she would whine to greet anyone and everyone who walked by. Apsen had the quickest—and longest tongue! She was relentless about the puppy kisses--a trait she never out grew. She loved the attention. Aspen made many lifelong friends.
Aspen was rarely without her glow-in-the-dark ball, popping from under her foot to throw it for herself if she couldn’t convince someone to play with her. The ball was her binky. It was never far away.
Aspen was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2008. She wasn’t given an optimistic prognosis. She underwent surgery to remove a 10 cm tumor from her abdomen and then another to remove the primary site tumor. She also went through IV chemo for several weeks and was on oral chemo agents for the next 2 years. Aspen was a trooper through it all, continuing to love going places, playing ball and visiting people. People had no idea she was sick. Aspen loved her vets, Dr. Freeman at the Cancer Referral Center in Portland, OR and the vet that treated her most of her life, Dr. Serrano at Ocean Beach Animal Hospital in Longview, WA. The doctors and staff at both the Cancer Referral Center and Ocean Beach Animal Hospital were the absolute best—for Aspen and for me. I can’t say or do enough for them in thanks!
Apsen passed away on November 2, 2010. I miss her more than anything! I am truly thankful for the 10 years we had together and the endless memories—but am broken-hearted that our journey together had to end!
