It’s hard to believe now but I wasn’t thrilled about getting a puppy when we got Tekna. I didn’t want to upset my cat’s world and I cried when my husband got his way and brought Tekna home. That didn’t last long. He quickly became “my boy”. Being a Brittany he always had so much energy and really didn’t slow down until later in life. When he was young the neighbor kids would come over and knock on the door to ask if Tekna could come out and play. Several years later we moved to acreage and he was in heaven! Every morning he would go out and run the perimeter of the property to make sure everything was just so. He absolutely loved his yard and the creek that ran through it. He would spend hours in the yard just watching the world go by. It wasn’t until he was 8 years old that we decided to breed him. He had 3 girls and we kept one. We thought that he needed a playmate but as it turns out he wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of having a daughter. Although he liked to pretend he didn’t want anything to do with her we know that he did love her a lot and they spent 7 years together as companions. He was a bird dog and would go hunting with my husband. We often joked that he wasn’t much of a hunter. He was more of the social dog and could be found out in the field sniffing around for other dogs instead of birds! It was opening day of hunting in Sept. 2012 that we first found out that Tekna had a health problem. While hunting he was totally out of breath and laid down to try to catch his breath. We took him to the vet the next day and he was diagnosed with laryngeal paralysis. In October 2012 he had surgery to help him breathe better. That surgery ended up giving us 3 more years with our sweet boy. Tekna was never really a barker but that surgery gave him a raspy sounding bark and suddenly he became a talker. We think he liked the sound of his new voice. In November 2014 he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and we treated him for that until the end of his life. We knew that he was on limited time so we were fortunate enough to have the time to love on him as much as we could.
We would like to thank all the doctors at Alpine View Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, WA. Tekna had seen all the doctors at the clinic over the years but we want to say a special thank you to Dr. Blake Murphy who really took good care of our boy during his final months.
We also want to thank Dr. Mison, Dr. Bottorff and especially Donna at Seattle Veterinary Specialists, in Kirkland, WA where Tekna was treated for his Laryngeal Paralysis and Congestive Heart failure.
Tekna was such a special dog that touched everyone’s hearts who met him. He was such a sweet boy with so much unconditional love to give. We had a special bond and we all miss him so much!
