Madison

A donation was made in memory of Madison by Ed and Marilyn Bartlett on Feb 16, 2021.

We named her Madison. She was born on June 12, 2017.

The best way to honor this sweet little girl is to say how much she was loved and what a trooper she was.

It seems from the get go, she had health problems... she came home to us with a UTI at 8 weeks old. She had four surgeries by the time she was 2 years old... due to calcium deposits intertwined in her muscles and tendons. We were hopeful she would outgrow these. Between surgeries and recoveries, she was like any other healthy, happy puppy.

At 2 1/2 years old, we noticed another lump on her leg. We had made a vet appointment, when she suddenly lost most of the use of her back legs. Our vet sent us to Washington State Veterinary Teaching Hospital for an MRI.

At WSU we were told she had a stroke to her spine. After bringing her home, we enrolled her in physical therapy and cold laser therapy.

She was showing signs of improvement when she suddenly began having seizures, which put a stop to her laser therapy.

In August 2020, as her legs seemed to somewhat improve, we started noticing her perception appeared off. Our vet confirmed she was having trouble with her eyesight and referred us to the Spokane Ophthalmology Hospital.

There, we were given the sad news that, although her eyes were fine physically, she had lost her eyesight and had gone blind.

The ophthalmology group sent us back to WSU Veterinary Hospital, where another MRI was taken.

Comparing the new MRI to the original one, revealed Madison’s brain was atrophying and there was no hope for recovery.

We took our sweet baby home and loved her like no other for the next 4-1/2 months.

Although her ability was limited, she maintained her sweet personality through all her troubles.

Our sweet girl lost her fight with life on February 16, 2021.

Dr. Wright, the neurologist at WSU, reached out to Dr. Katz, in Missouri, and they are running a genome panel to hopefully figure out this unknown genetic disorder.

Our greatest hope is that the study of her disorder will benefit future pets.

She is sorely missed and there will never be another Madison. She left an imprint on everyone who has ever met her - her physical therapist said even though she had a rough go of it, her sweet spirit always shined through.
