Jack

A donation was made in memory of Jack by Drs. Whereat and Heeren at Northwest Veterinary Hospital on Feb 19, 2021.

Our Accidental Dog No one wanted this dog with quick black eyes and stiff white fur. He never sat still. In every photo, a bright blur.

Why was he -- dropped off at the pound? Sentenced to be put down. Overlooked all around.

But my wife was looking for a temporary foster to quiet her grief, after our lab’s sad departure.

She didn’t plan to keep him. A pretty collie was her goal. But Jack jumped in her lap and touched her soul.

He proved charming, curious, eager to please. Always up for a snack, especially cheese.

Within a month, they were quite the pair, There wasn’t much they didn’t share.

Essentially inseparable, often insistent, My wife nannied kids with her canine assistant.

Smiling and handsome, he had spiky fur most awesome. She called him half terrier, half possum.

He scouted ahead on walks, exploring nooks and crannies. He liked to meet everyone -- kiddos, folks, and grannies.

He loved scavenger hunts, traveling, and wading, But never, not ever, to be left waiting.

We were his pack, and he was our close-knit clan. As dear to us as any woman, child or man.

But then one day, not hungry. That morning’s walk, he lagged behind. We took him to the vet, afraid of what they’d find.

The doctor’s verdict: cancer. We felt bereft. We had only weeks or months with him left.

We opted for surgery, on the doc’s advice, The thought of maybe five more years, it did entice.

But instead the end came quickly. One morning, we’re sharing bacon. Five days later, he was taken.

We have cherished all our dogs. We sorrow when they go. How we can continue living, we don’t know.

But should we not love so as to save ourselves from pain? Or is our heartache a sign we will learn to love again?

We miss him so. His zest, his tricks, his every snack. Someday we’ll smile again, but for now we miss our Jack

Comments: Jack was deserving of many more good years, but luck wasn't on his side. All of our animal friends deserve the chance to beat the odds. That's why I'm donating in Jack's name.
