ZOEY MAE of the WIGHT FAMILY

Ruth and I are typical old-fashioned dog lovers. We personify our pets and - like many of us "old timers" - make them an integral part of our family. We have had four great pet dogs in these past 50 years - companions and playmates, fellow travelers in our extensive RV travels and other adventures. We have cherished these pets.

Zoey Mae was special! She was our second miniature schnauzer, so we were prepared for the "schnauzer temperament - or so we thought!

She was born in Arkansas. Within a couple weeks of bringing her home from the breeder, we set out on an extensive RV trip, about 2 months duration. So she was "domesticated" "on the road", and in retrospect we are not sure who trained who! She developed a keen interest in her varied environments .... curious about places, people, other pets, a bit shy at first meeting in her social contacts - but always friendly and willing to engage socially. When she was less than a year old, we "hit the road" full-time RV'ing for about two years. The nomadic trailer life was her bag! "What next?", she seemed to say! Zoey was always excited when she observed us "loading gear" for a trip, and ready to ramble! She truly enjoyed the close environment of our trailer.

Her world - and ours - was the family trio... she, Ruth and I. We RARELY were separated more than a few hours at a time, throughout her life. Unless all three of us were together, she wasn't truly happy and contented. Zoey developed techniques to "punish" us when we left her alone - not destructive, just symbolic. Her favorite "I told you not to leave me!" gambit was to find a waste basket, remove a piece of paper or a tissue, and tear it into several pieces. Just one! Her view of punishing us!

Because she grew up on the road RV'ing, she was a "leash dog", not too comfortable unless "hooked up" to one of us! Off-leash, she stayed close and always responded to a call to come and get leashed up. Her favorite outdoor "game" from puppyhood on was to romp and run back and forth between and around us in a figure 8 pattern if Ruth and I stood 25-30 feet apart and urged her on. Great fun, she thought!

She slept with us every night - her pillow in the middle, but then she would migrate down and snuggle against one or the other of us after lights out, generally "sharing her presence" with one of us on a rotating basis. And she LOVED snuggling under a blanket or afghan. Ruth crocheted many of them over the past ten years, and Zoey would crawl under her "work in progress' just as soon as there was enough of it to be effective!

She was our pal - our companion - our family member! I' m sure she considered herself to be our pack leader! And in a sense, she was! We miss her so much!
