To the staff and patrons of the Vet Memorial Fund: Feb 14 2018 Sleep, my baby

Chase, our Bichon Frise was a dear friend, companion and member of our family. His death created a hole in our heart and home. He is missed everyday. He was an extraordinary dog who made us laugh and cry. On walks, without much training he almost never needed a leash and stopped and waited for me to say, “cross the street”. He had his place in our living room where he would sit on the top of the chair observing the household activities. His love was to play with the his favorite tennis ball. He loved to undo the knot I tied around a scrap of blanket and dig it out just like a dog digging in the dirt. Afterward, he would bring it to me. Chase was eleven years old when we put him to sleep. You see Chase had faced many challenges in his life. He was a rescue. Chase was one of those unlucky dogs that developed renal tubular acidosis and corresponding anorexia. Three weeks after the surgical removal of a bladder stone and liver biopsy while he was outside on the front lawn we heard a terrible cry. We ran immediately to find his entire stomach and intestines outside of his body underneath him on the lawn. Doctors call it an evisceration. I quickly picked him up and flipped him on his back placing a towel over his abdomen and we drove him urgently to the Animal Medical Clinic in Lynnwood. He survived. His doctor, Dr. Mortimer, calls Chase “the man, the myth and the legend”. Chase started to sway and seemed to lose focus five months after his surgery so we took him back to the AMC. Doctors tried to save him but his acid base balance was uncontrollable, and his chemistry's were now out of balance too. We rushed in early on Friday morning to find him laboring and suffering. He had a fever. He raised his head when he heard my voice. The decision to put him to sleep was instantaneous. We held him while he was sedated and given the injection. On the way home the radio played “sleep, my baby”.
