Spencer’s Story,
December 2000 my beloved Spencer was just waiting for me. We had just 5 months earlier lost our 17-year-old Black Lab, Dudley. The house felt empty even though we had our other 1-year-old Black Lab, Bradley and another 17-year-old Lab, Jezebel. So after 5 months I decided I needed to fill this huge hole not only in my house but also in my heart. So I went out to the Troutdale, Or. Animal Shelter, and arrived on a Wed at 10:00 A.M. The Parking lot was empty and I found the shelter was closed. The minute I shut the door, out of the woods this little puppy came running as fast as he could. His tail was wagging and he immediately sat down in front of me. He looked up at me with the most beautiful soulful face and eyes, all the time wagging his tail.
I picked him up and took him to my car where he climbed into my lap. I asked myself what’s wrong with this picture as we were hoping to find another Lab at the Shelter. It was obvious that with the shelter being closed someone had just dumped him off. I was so lucky that he had picked me as his new mother! We named him Spencer and he was a fantastic dog that never had an accident in the house from day one. We moved to Coeur d’Alene where he had the chance to do a lot of swimming in the lake in the summer and enjoyed playing in the snow in the winter. He was never without a stuffed animal in his mouth and could even bark at the same time. He was a brave little soul right up to the end when we found out how severe his liver condition was. We loved him for the short time we had him as he gave us so much joy.
Our thanks go out to all the staff at WSU, Dr Tucker and Bridgett for all their special care and to Dr King and his staff.
We will miss him terrible and will live the rest of our lives with his wonderful memories.
