It’s still hard to talk about Napoleon, even after weeks since his passing. He was a smart, handsome, willing little Hackney pony, whose life was, except for 3 months, anything but happy. You see, Napoleon and his dam were rescue ponies. They were brought in when he was 18 months old – both much neglected. He was not adopted out until he was 4 years old and I took him. He would never have made a riding pony, he had way too much action and forward movement, but he would have been the perfect driving pony. And I wanted to train him to drive. We made great progress in the little over 3 months I worked with him. He just desperately wanted to be my BEST friend and was willing (or mostly so :-) to do just about anything I asked. This, from a pony that had seen almost nothing of life or human training, was seriously amazing. I grew to love him deeply in the very short period of time we had together. Napoleon died – at a routine vet appointment, in less than 5 minutes, of a pulmonary embolism. As it was explained to me, it was something that could have ruptured at any time, anywhere, for any reason. We were blessed to have happen as it did, for many vets and technicians tried to save him. He lives with me every day in my heart and I know, for the time we had together, he was a very happy little guy.
