Little Girl

“Little Girl” June 2000 - November 28, 2017
My husband and I adopted “Fancy” from Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in May 2001. She was 11 months old and had experienced a difficult first year having been returned to the organization three times due to “bad behavior.” It had been suspected and was subsequently confirmed that she had been abused by her previous adopters, specifically men, resulting in her undesirable actions.
We were determined to provide her with a loving and comforting home in which she would feel safe. Due to her history, she was extremely wary of my husband, however he spent months slowly approaching her, respecting her fears and eventually won her trust.
We decided to start her life over and change her name but we couldn’t settle on one that we both felt was appropriate. In the interim, we referred to her as “Little Girl” and that moniker never changed, despite the fact it became unfitting as she developed into a very large cat!
A few months later, we adopted “Punkin” a feral cat, from another animal rescue organization. It wasn’t a match made in heaven, but eventually she and Little Girl grew to tolerate each other and eventually become somewhat close.
In 2008, we moved to Central Washington with grand hopes of a new life for our family. Within a very short period of time, my beloved husband passed away from a rare form of cancer. My cats’ companionship was the only source of strength that got me through this terribly painful time. A few years later, Punkin succumbed to a defective heart condition which left me with more pain and Little Girl with confusion and lonesomeness. It took her months to stop looking for Punkin. While Little Girl had never been an affectionate cat, she then became my almost constant companion. She seemed to understand that it was just going to be the two of us from then on and gave me such great joy and comfort the next five years.
Now she is also gone and I miss her terribly. My only sense of comfort is that she is now with my husband, Punkin and our previous cat, Sunny. They will forever be in my heart.
