Molly

A donation was made in memory of Molly by Dr. Prickett at Animal World Veterinary Clinic on Feb 25, 2025.

About 2 weeks after my Dad passed away unexpectedly, Ben was visiting a friend whose dog had just had a litter of puppies. I came home from work that day to find a chunky black lab puppy in our tiny apartment. She was already antagonizing our 5 year old chihuahua Cocoa and our year-old cat, Frank.

Molly was an incredible best friend. She loved kids, often letting them climb on her to take a nap. She could jump higher than our sliding glass door, especially when the squirrels that lived in our backyard came out to chatter at her. Molly loved to go camping, boating, fishing, and swimming. On one memorable fishing trip, she leapt off the boat to fetch the lure when Ben cast his line. Did you know it’s rather difficult to drag a soaking wet, 95 pound dog into a boat? She also loved going to the ocean and checking out the beach. Molly could say I Love You on command (i.e. for cookies). Her favorite dessert was apple pie (eaten off the counter while home alone); she loved strawberries, blueberries, and cantaloupe. We couldn’t have candy canes, or anything candy-cane-adjacent, around on Christmas because she became a peppermint-seeking missile. She was obsessed with squeaky toys, especially her giant hedgehogs. She loved being tucked in with a warm blanket at night.

When Molly was around 9, her back legs started to give out; just once in a while at first, and eventually she could barely walk on her own. I was doing research into ways to help her, adamant that she still had a lot of life in her. We tried a few things, and eventually I found Walkin’ Pets’ wheelchairs.

Less than a month later, we got Molly hooked up in her new chair. She was an instant menace. I lost count of how many times she flipped herself over because she took a corner too quickly or tried to go up some steps. We had bruised shins for the rest of her life because she liked to back into our legs.

Shortly before she passed, we welcomed a rescue puppy into our home. Molly and Nori bonded quickly, and it seemed to give Molly a little extra pep for those last couple of months. And as much as she grumbles at Nori, I think Cocoa (who is now 18!) is happy to still have a big dog around. We miss Molly, but we are so glad that we made so many wonderful memories together.
