Wolfy
A donation was made in memory of Wolfy by doctors and staff at Northwest Veterinary Hospital on Jan 12, 2022.
The journey I had with Wolfy is something that I will remember for the rest of my life. I grew up as a kid that was scared of dogs, I had never liked dogs. When my ex-girlfriend brought Wolfy home when he was 8 weeks old as she wanted a pet, I remembered I almost gave him to a friend because I couldn’t stand his barking and accidents at home. For the first four years of Wolfy’s childhood, though we started to build our relationship, I still only saw him as a pet, I played with him but I didn’t know what it meant to be a pet owner.
When Wolfy was four years old, my girlfriend left me while I was in Hong Kong and she gave up the dog as she believed that Wolfy would be in a better place than staying with me, which she might be right. When I came back to Seattle, Wolfy had been gone for 10 days and it took me 4 days to find him at Seattle Animal Shelter, which they were about to transfer him to another facility as no one was adopting him for 14 days. I was lucky to find him back and re-claimed as the owner of Wolfy. At that point on, I truly started to learn what it took be his dad, which to Wolfy it meant the whole world to him.
We slowly built our bond over the next 10 years, Wolfy had always been gifted physically, he was always healthy and full of energy. Even at the age of 13, he looked like a 5-year-old to a lot of people. I had countless wonderful times with him and he’s always giving me joy and love. As an immigrant in the United States, my family members are not in the US. And I don’t like socializing with people, so Wolfy had always been my only family member through all the holidays and celebrations. Through those years, not only was I the only one in Wolfy’s world, he meant the whole world to me too.
Shortly after Wolfy’s 14th birthday, he was diagnosed with Melanoma, and my world turned completely dark after that. The cancer was so aggressive that he was not expected to live for more than 3 months. From May through September 2021, he had a total of 3 surgeries, 1 chemotherapy and 1 radiation therapy around his lips and neck. To see him going through those at the age of 14 was absolutely the most painful time in my life. But Wolfy was a true warrior, not only did he make it through all the surgeries and treatments but also maintained a very good level of energy. Since then, I took him out to every park for a walk, every single day regardless of raining or not. I felt so blessed that god gave me the opportunity to have such a wonderful time with him during his last stage of life.
Wolfy passed away peacefully in December 2021, eight months after the first diagnosis which was out of everyone’s expectation. I wanted to thank WSU VTH for the great care and treatment they provided to Wolfy, there were 2 months where Wolfy was considered as cancer free, which allowed me to take him out for camping and see the beautiful world.
When I took Wolfy back from the shelter, I thought I saved his life. Throughout these 14 years of journey with him, however, I realized that Wolfy was the angel god sent to save me. Wolfy taught me what unconditional love truly means, he taught me how to be a responsible man and to take care of family, I’ve learned a lot from him and I will love him and miss him for the rest of my life.
Veterinary care is crucial to every single pet owner. Unlike human, pet doesn’t know how to tell us if they are not feeling well. Last year the veterinary support in the US was extremely limited due to pandemic and staff shortage. I hope my small contribution can help with the situation, even just a little, so that each pet can have a quality of life that they deserve. And I truly hope every pet owner can make the contribution as well.
