A tail of love

On January 21, 2009, after 12 wonderful years, our beloved, beautiful, perfect poodle boy Sam passed away. He died of sudden onset multiple kidney failure. Sam was a stray who came into our lives (and yours if you knew him).

He walked up to Peg while she was getting the mail. He brought so much love, joy and laughter to our lives, it was amazing. He earned “Best in Class” at his puppy training. Sam loved to make people laugh. He was at his happiest when he was unwrapping presents, the center of attention, tearing paper and cardboard, making a huge mess, and making everyone laugh. He was so smart. He understood nearly everything that was said to him. Knowing all of his toys by name, he would be happy to go and get the one that you asked for. He loved going to the beach and evening walks with his Daddy. He loved playing catch. Pick up a ball and he would be 25ft away in an instant waiting to catch it. We always said “look out Ichiro, here comes Sam!” He kept his Mommy company every day, happy to run and play, or sit and daydream. He faithfully guarded the entire cul-de-sac and the birdies, from all cats. No cat was too sneaky to escape his watch.

Three years ago all that squirrel chasing, playing ball and running, caught up with him. He tore his left rear ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). After a long but successful recuperation, he was back to the same old Sam. We had a good year, and then he started gaining weight and eating voraciously. In 2008 he was diagnosed with Cushing Disease. This is a very difficult and complicated disease to treat, quite hard on Sam, and hard for Mom and Dad. It requires incredible diligence on humans’ part. We had to watch him for subtle changes of any kind. He was given daily, then weekly chemotherapy, which was to continue for the remainder of his life.

He was losing weight, got his energy back, and was his happy loving self. Then he got suddenly very very sick. He spent a day at the vet, came home, was miserable and obviously in distress. The next day he went back. The vet was hopeful that she could pull him through. We went to see him and it was all too apparent that he was in desperate pain. He looked at us as if to say, "Mommy, Daddy, please help me." We made the decision to end his suffering. We held him as tight as we could, told him what a good boy he was, how much we loved him, how we would see him again, sang to him his special Sam Song, and he was gone. We will love and miss him forever…

We want to thank Dr. Carson and all the staff and Vets at Sacajawea Animal Hospital in Federal Way. They too loved Sam.

Peg & Jay A.
