Bismark

A donation was made in memory of Bismark by Drs. Virgin and Crouthers at Sacajawea Healthcare for Pets on Dec 08, 2017.

Bismark, our miniature schnauzer, was rescued from a very large two family puppy mill in late 2009. We adopted him through the Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue program in February 2010. He came to us as only a number, he had no name. My husband came up with the name Bismark and it was perfect for him.

From the moment he was handed to me I knew this little guy was something special. He would need a lot of love and a lot of care. We were ready to give an abundance of both. He had a very timid little spirit. His fur was very thin and coarse, the only teeth in his mouth were his four fangs, he had a small hole in one ear where a tag had been placed that was healing, he was afraid of everything. He had never had interaction with a human being who cared. We knew his life to this point hadn’t been a good one.

Through the years he became more confident though still very afraid of loud noises and voices and not too sure about people other than our family. He loved to explore our, well his, big back yard creating little paths where he routinely wandered. He learned that he like to pounce and chase and play causing much laughter and joy. He loved the jingle of car keys as he knew that sound usually meant a trip to the marina and park where he would sniff every blade of grass, mark each fence post, act so tough, and meet new four (and two) legged friends. He loved to ride in the van – his ‘van cave’ I called it as the back was configured just for him. When we would return home and pull into the garage, he would often lift his head and give me a look of ‘you can go into the house now, I’ll sleep here in my van cave for a while’, which I let him do, or ignore me altogether. He had become quite comfortable and was relishing in all that he had. And he so deserved it.

My husband passed away the year after we adopted Bismark. From that point to the dreadful day I knew I had to let my little four-legged savior go to Heaven the two of us were a very close team. And to this day I don’t know who rescued who.

He will forever hold a special place in my heart and my mind is filled with wonderful memories of my little four-legged buddy. The seven years we had him were way too few.

In loving memory of Bismark,

Ruth Strawser
