I found Lucky running around an auto racing track. The woman who ran the concessions there said he loved lasagna, so when we brought him home we made sure we kept tempting "people food" out of his reach. But over time, the most interesting thing happened. He still loved the occasional treat and showed an almost obsessive fondness for the rolled edges of pizza crust. But he never, ever, took anything off a plate. Not once, even when we weren't there. We had an understanding and he never abused the trust we showed because he knew he was going to be treated fairly...and not just at mealtime.
Lucky was without doubt the most mellow dog I've ever known. We do a number of lengthy road trips and he was the perfect travelling companion. In the car he'd just sit with his head in between the two front seats, and in the hotel he'd just lie on his rug until it was time for his walk. An incredibly adaptable and tolerant dog, even late in life.
Lucky was my best friend for the 11 years he was with us. He was a constant source of joy and amusement. His ability to make friends (even with felines) was just another example of his wonderful character. He taught me a lot about love, friendship, and at the end, about letting go. I will always miss him...but I will never forget him.
