Maggie
A donation was made in memory of Maggie on Feb 03, 2013.
In memory of my beautiful, sweet Maggie the dachshund, our time together was much too short. I will never get over the shock and sadness of her January 15, 2013 diagnosis of metastastic lung cancer, rapid decline, and gentle death at home in her bed on January 24, 2013.
Maggie is preceded in death by her husband Zepple's rapid onset of lung embolism/pneumonia also on January 15th and his death on January 19th. My heart is broken at the sudden loss of both my lovely friends.
March 3, 2012, by coincidence, I found 9 year old Maggie, at the Tacoma Humane Society, three days after her family of six years had taken her on a car ride (her favorite activity) and dumped her off. Maggie's crime? She had growled at their 12 month old grandchild. Shelter staff expressed their disbelief and indignation on Maggie's behalf. They found her to be a sweet, friendly, well-mannered dog and very appreciative of a long overdue haircut and removal of matted clumps. I couldn't believe my luck at finding such a grand lady. Zepple agreed and we brought her home that same day. It was mutual love at first sight; within a couple hours they were curled up sleeping together.
Standard-sized Maggie was much bigger than miniature Zepple. She could have easily knocked him over or stepped on him. But she was very dainty in how she moved with and around him. She renewed his enthusiasm for neighborhood walks, car rides and park adventures. They ate their meals together side-by-side. She was always respectful of Zepple, a much slower eater. She was sweet and loving to every person she met, especially children.
Maggie took the lead in home security matters, but she was a judicious barker. She chased chickens from our yard and deterred particular cats that she did not like.
Maggie was cuddly, fun and very wise. In addition to cancer, she suffered from arthritis, obesity and a heart murmur. She was a devoted companion until her body would no longer allow it.
Special thanks to Dr. Neeson and Dr. Thiessen at Chambers Creek Veterinary Hospital, Lakewood, WA, for their expertise and extraordinary compassion. Maggie was a lucky dog in their care.
