Squish
A donation was made in memory of Squish by doctors and staff at Ravenna Animal Hospital on Aug 05, 2021.
Squish was a mixed-breed cat with some lynx-point Siamese in him, cream with irregular patches of gray and brown mackerel tabby patterns, and soft blue eyes. He was born in a feral colony in the South Park area of Seattle and originally treated as a TNR cat; but a friend of a friend who owned the neighboring property decided to rescue as many of the cats in the colony as she could.
Squish's first home was with a dear friend who gave him his name due to his tendency to "squish" himself under furniture. After a year, it became clear that he needed both more human time than our friend could provide, and another cat to hang out with. We were considering adding a cat to keep our energetic, anxious tux boy Kaga company, and we took Squish in.
The first day of Kaga and Squish interacting involved a lot of chasing and wrestling; but by bedtime they were hanging out together under our bed. They would remain the image of "brothers" for nearly 16 years, alternately fighting and causing havoc, and cuddling together and grooming affectionately.
Squish had an adventurous life with us, including two cross-country moves (from Seattle to south NJ and back), five houses, three months of living in a motel, and two hurricanes, one of which we had to evacuate for. In addition to the two humans and his feline brother, Squish also shared his homes with three German shepherd dogs, all of whom he showed affection to. He and our current GSD would often share headbumps and sit together on the balcony, bros enjoying time together.
Squish was not overly gifted with intellect, but he was a happy, easygoing cat who took life as it came. He would sit in front of closed curtains trying to look outside. He sometimes got trapped on the back side of open doors. A front-loading washing machine in operation was puzzling to him. He once got a boot lace wrapped around himself somehow, and when he tried to run from it, the boot followed him all over the house. We often described him as being a cross between the characters of Derek Zoolander and "The Dude" from THE BIG LEBOWSKI.
He had the softest fur and the sharpest little teeth (though he didn't use them often). He deployed the silent meow with deadly skill. He would wander around the house yelling "Hello?" if he didn't know where we were. He loved lap time, laser pointers, wrestling with Kaga, begging for takeout chicken, sleeping on top of the cat tree, watching birds on the patio, sitting on the floor registers when the heat was on, and his "haunted castle" scratching house.
He was diagnosed with kidney disease in January 2021, though he was still in good health overall, and we managed his condition with diet and attention. He was fine for many months, and then suddenly he wasn't, and we are still heartbroken at how abruptly we had to say goodbye.
He was a delight to live with and we will always cherish the little lynx who shared our life.
