Cody Jo
A donation was made in memory of Cody Jo by Doctors and Staff of the Feline Medical Clinic on Nov 02, 2009.
Yesterday at about 8:30AM we let Cody go. She went so quietly and peacefully. Dr Burhenn was the one who saved Cody and Ruby when they were sick as kittens so I insisted she be the one to put Cody to peace. She talked quietly to Cody the whole time, thanking Cody for the love and companionship she gave us and telling her that we loved her. We gave her my old flannel shirt to be cremated with. I didn't want to bury her here...this yard wasn't anything to her.
I had hours and hours with her in my arms the last night. I gave her water and held her for about 10 hours; same with the night before. She peed on me a couple of times but I didn't mind. Ruby seems unaware although she has been howling a lot in the voice that sounds like she is crying.."Carollllll".
It had to end somehow...this wasn't the worst way, I guess.
My favorite memories of Cody include the day I was labeling my shoe boxes. There was a brand called "No Excuses" (made famous by women who had caused scandals with politicians). I had a gray pair and a white pair. I labeled one box: "Gray No Excuses". Cody walked right in and squeezed her chubby body into the box. I’ve got a picture of that somewhere...Cody sitting there labeled: GRAY...No Excuses! That was Cody Jo all right.
Another funny memory I have is from when Doug and the girls and I moved into this house. The door was left opened accidentally and Doug saw Cody outside by the car. We tried to catch her but she ran away. For days we scoured the neighborhood, put up signs and even went to the ASPCA. We were all so bummed out that we were starting our life together in the new house without Cody. Three days later we were sitting in the living room eating pizza, when suddenly, from behind the sofa, Cody came strolling out. She had been in there the whole time, just waiting until she was comfy enough with the new house to come out. Who had Doug seen outside? Well, it was Cody's double. Someone even called afterward to say they had found Cody. Several times I saw that cat outside and had to look to make sure Cody was actually in front of my eyes in the house. It was eerie!
I had the oddest sensation as we were driving home from the vet's that my mother suddenly was saying: "I've got her"! That was strange because my mom wasn't particularly an animal person, yet I felt sure she was telling me that Cody was with her and fine. When Cody's heart went silent, the Doctor didn't say "she's at peace" or "she's gone", she said, "She's safe". I know she is.
