Dear Jane,
When we met I had no idea that we would spend the next 10 years together. You were an old soul already. Having been used as breeding stock in a backyard puppy mill only to be dropped off, with one of your many children, some months or years later by your supposed "rescuers", claiming "she chases our chickens. . .it's this or the pound." I was just a rescue volunteer with no intention of taking a dog home that day. I could see that you were scared and confused. So I patted your head and said hello, but when I stepped back, you scooted closer and nuzzled your head into my hand again. As if to say "I am a good dog really, please stay with me." I know that day was painful for you my dear; abandoned, separated from your beloved son Dale, whom you never stopped missing, but for me it was a lucky twist of fate. I gained a best friend that day. How could I not love you? For all the loss and hardships you endured in your life, you never wavered in sweetness and trust. You were a foster mom to countless puppies waiting for a home of their own. You reassured and looked after them well, because you knew what it was to be abandoned and then to be found. You were always there for me, followed me anywhere, and did anything I asked without question. All that I know of true loyalty and forgiveness I learned from you. Thank you for keeping me and loving me. You will always have a home in my heart.

Then you gave her a great pal and comforter, while supporting so many other rescues in their journey through fostering and adoption. Because of your love for Crystal, I could always go to sleep at night knowing you were there, close by her side, to keep our daughter safe from any and all types of danger.
