Penny
A donation was made in memory of Penny by Christie Anderson on Nov 17, 2010.
I adopted Penny when she was 3 months old and she lived to be 15 years of age. She was a beautiful, affectionate, faithful friend and companion. We loved her desperately. She was part of our family and known by all our friends. She hiked and camped with me and greeted my husband with a smile and tail wag every morning as she walked across the hall to his office.
If she wanted something you knew it. She would thump her foot on the ground and then bark at you when you asked her what she wanted. She loved to go for walks, and when she was ready to go you better be ready too or she'd harass and bark at you till you took her. You would have no peace until you did as she wanted, even on her last day of life she went for a walk with me. Her last one on earth.
In July 2010, Penny was diagnosed with bone cancer. At 14 years of age and with bilateral hip dysplasia, surgery was not an option. We were referred to WSU's oncology department for Pallative Radiation treatment where Penny made friends with Dr. Anderson and veterinary student, Josh. She trusted them and never once seemed concerned about going with them for her therapy. They took great care of her. Better than I could have ever imagined. The radiation gave her 3+ months of extra time with us and she did amazingly well with it.
Unfortunately 2 months after finishing her treatment, she developed a gastric ulcer due to NSAID use and it was necessary to take her off of them permanently. Soon after, it became very difficult for her to get up or lay down on her own and she was painful even for normal daily activities. But she still asked for her walks most days.
She became anemic and weak and tired and we knew our time with her was coming to an end so we did the most difficult thing ever because we loved her so. We let her go to the Rainbow Bridge with the others where she would feel no pain and could walk as far and as often as she wanted.
Thank you Christie and Josh for your care and love of our family member Penny. We will never forget your kindness and we will never forget Penny Lou. Bless you.
