CESSNA
Rescued 1998 died May 18, 2011
When we first found Cessna she had been locked in a barn with broken ribs and a broken leg. After nursing her back to health we made a deal with Cessna, That she needed to pay her way in the family, we were on the rebound from the loss of our German Sheppard “Shepp” of 14 years. We were just beginning construction of our new house so.. Cessna set out to make sure all cardboard/packing material was of appropriate size for recycling once she completed this task we found her climbing ladders and scaffolding bringing whatever implement that was or wasn’t required at that moment.
With quite a thirst built up she would, with much ease open lids on milk cartons and water jugs for all of us to partake in. With Construction completed she began visiting the Crisis Clinic in Bellingham to donate blood after many pints of blood and toys to the humane society she was holding up her end of the bargain.
My job required me travel all over the world for months at a time but upon my return she would still wait and let my wife have the first hug and kiss. Then I took a permanent position in Vancouver, WA. And construction began all over with the ever helpful Cessna doing her part as the canine project manager The added bonus was we have a small wetlands on the property that soon became affectionately known as the “Cess Pool” by midsummer things began to become ripe in the wetlands and there was no keeping her out of the “Cess Pool”.
We began our alpaca farm shortly after construction and found that Cessna was a natural on operating machinery plus, in the beginning of our farm all the animals were purchased and came from other farms and most of these animals were afraid of dogs. That not being in Cessna’s nature to accept someone or something being afraid, she made it her mission to win over the alpacas. “Mission Accomplished” so much so that the very next day that Cessna left us to be with those that had passed before her, our prize female just up and died. (Nothing wrong with any part of her according to the Vet. Blood work pending).
Cessna touched many lives as she travelled with us to the interior of British Columbia or Colorado or by putting a smile on my mentally handicapped sister, she taught a woman in Whatcom county not to fear dogs but… she was also the only dog this lady would touch.. Amazing huh! She has trained our new rescue dog Madeline a neurotic red dobie to chase birds protect her humans and alpacas and to enjoy the flight of the Cessna airplanes as they fly over the farm from time to time. Even the deer have come back and look for protection all this from the teachings and life of the “Greatest Dog Ever”!
Authors note* Though Cessna in her last years was inflected by cushings’s disease, panis, and was a cancer survivor she would not have wanted it any other way I firmly believe that the reason she had an enlarged heart was just to make room to wisk away ailments, sad moments and fears that others may have been troubled with… it was hear cross to bear…….. her Motto “Happy, Happy, Happy”.
We are very HAPPY to have been a part of your life Cessna.
Love you always,
Your greatest fans
AND THIS STORY FROM A FRIEND OF KEN & LAURA
Find a quiet moment, a nice glass of wine, be happy for this Wonderful life we have shared.
It's been a busy, tough week.. along with all the meetings and decisions and....
For me... some dog..gone sadness with the final hours of my beloved neighbor’s dog Cessna. A lovely Silver German Shepherd?.. who gave her heart to me when I needed a companion to get me out and walking to recover from that nasty anemia clear back in '06 and '07. Less time running and walking as her eyesight waned and then so many difficulties like huge cancer abscesses... wonderfully removed, health better and so loving.. Always a barking hello when she spotted John ... or me working outside the apartment. And happy greetings when I arrived to visit.. with mildly impatient nudging and sniffing 'cause she knew I often brought "Mid Treats".. or as Laura said, "Mid cookies for Cessna"... small meat scraps too good to waste but too small to use otherwise... I'd put them in zip lock bags in the freezer... some beef, ham, pork, tiny bits of ham, chicken, turkey... nothing real spicy but a few added every so often grew to nice packages of treats... and Cessna "you spoiled her completely"
I got told. "She wouldn't take her meds, eat anything else" with those awful tasting pills she sometimes needed... for stopping the near blindness that pretty much closed down our walks, especially outside their completed Alpaca fences and yard. But she ALWAYS walked down to the barn with Ken & Laura to "do the chores" when they went to clean up and feed morning and night, right to the last few days... Laura told me "that was her job, to go with Ken and no matter if it was cold, wet, windy... she had to do that, we could not to stop her, help her a little ...". The alpacas loved her.. or simply tolerated her presence under most circumstances. But she watched over them, barked off the coyotes who wanted to come join and get their meal inside that fence... and how she loved it when Ken fired his shotgun over those coyotes heads... and later into them.. he was way beyond warning them off. Cessna sounded the warning, Ken answered. They were a team.
Some of the last special moments I cherish include when Ken and Laura came over to deliver the beautiful wreath which Laura makes and gives me every
year... this past Dec. They didn't come in the 4 wheeler she loved to
ride on the back of.. oh so many wonderful excursions. They lifted her into their pickup so she could come. As I came out to accept the wreath and said hello... though very weak, she struggled enough to her feet to come from the back up to where I was. Thinking back I should have just put the wreath down and hopped in there to give her a big hug. She came far enough I could love her, stroke her tired head and share how much that meant to me. A couple of times I went visiting and she had to struggle to get to her feet enough to move over to be near me while we visited. We were all amazed how many months she kept on getting up and willing a tired, noncompliant body to work just a bit longer. She had to train that hyper Doberman dog Ken & Laura rescued... get Madeline toned down a little and show her the right place for a #2 dog! She even lasted till we had a few nicer, warmer days... oh she loved, even with that big coat of hers, the warmth of the sun. Over the winter she lost a lot of hair so relished the warmth. Laura's brother came visiting and cared for Cessna so well while they took a trip and were off on business. What a gift... Laura felt sure it really extended and gave meaning to life for our tired friend.
The final wonderful gift I salute and thank our Cessna for giving?... Again and again over all the early years they lived here and before, she donated blood to an animal hospital or blood bank up north toward Bellingham where they moved from... yes they took her back regularly and she sensed how important it was because she really enjoyed those trips and the love she shared and received. An incredible friend... welcomed and cherished in Heaven.
Love you so much... !
