In October, 2013 my husband and I adopted two 4-year-old rescue Scottish Terriers, Ranger Dave (black) and Rooster Cogburn (wheaten). We were somewhat reluctant to take on two new dogs at once, but they were littermates and the rescue organization asked that they remain together. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of our lives. Both boys immediately became beloved family members. Their given names were a bit of a mouthful so they became Ranger and Rudy.
They were feisty like most terriers, but, more importantly, they were loving and cheerful little dogs. Their comical antics always made us laugh.
For several years we enjoyed many outings and road trips with our little Scottie boys. They traveled with us throughout the western US and visited several national parks (where dogs were permitted of course!). They were a cute pair and attracted attention wherever we went. They were great conversation starters and we met many people curious to learn about Scotties.
In their later years both Rudy and Ranger were diagnosed with cancer. Rudy was diagnosed in August 2019 and we were encouraged to take him to the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment. Thankfully, his surgery was successful and his cancer went into remission. Ranger developed a nearly identical cancer and also had a successful surgery at WSU in October 2021. Eventually we had to say goodbye to our little Rudy on June 17, 2022. Ranger stayed with us a few more months until we had to say goodbye on April 26, 2023.
Our hearts are still broken and there's not a day that goes by that we do not miss our little Scottie boys. However, we are forever grateful to the veterinary team at WSU. WSU's skilled doctors and technicians treated our boys with utmost care and gave us several extra years of quality time together.
