Many people name their dog Penny, it happens to be one of the most popular dog names around. Our Penny was special, she was kind, protective, loyal and full of energy, but what Corgi isn't. No, our Penny was the best dog a human could ask for. She was spoiled rotten but that's what you get when your humans work from home. She had a dog bed on every floor of the house, even getting her own room later in life. Her daily routine included following her humans around, sleeping on her many beds and chasing turkeys when they were in the backyard. One time she rolled in turkey poop just for fun, though it wasn't fun for her human to wash off. Having had a Corgi sibling who passed away at a young age, Penny was especially cared for. Each birthday was a celebration, grateful we got another great year with such a great pup. Not known for their long lifespans, Penny proved Corgi's are just as young and playful at twelve as they are as puppies. Penny didn't look sick, she didn't even act sick. She hid her pain, always barking and running around to be with us wherever we were. She began to slow down, took longer to come when she was called, sleeping in her many beds all day long. It felt so sudden to be told we had days to decide her fate. We could have days left with her, weeks or even months, but you could tell in her eyes she was ready. Her family was not ready to make that decision, they thought what a great twelve years they had had, why now? Could we brave a journey of medical procedures to keep her with us longer, how selfish of us that would be. Penny knew her time had come and let us know she was ready. On a Monday we said goodbye to our beloved Penny. No more barking when the doorbell rings, no more chasing turkeys, no dog beds, no more Penny. The house is quiet and we are still saddened over our loss. We take comfort in knowing our Penny like all dogs went to heaven, where she's playing with all the other Penny's. To all those who have ever lost a Penny, your Penny and ours was special.
