The Abbey B. Story
“Abbey” is short for Ebony B. (2000 to 2011). Our dog was a German Shepherd disguised as a Black Lab who thought she was a Grey Hound. We clocked her in the 50 yard dash at 4.8 seconds.
Abbey had a lot of freedom because she learned discipline at an early age. Walking her at heel I once approached a leashed dog, both dogs avoided eye contact until we crossed paths, then the other dog bolted at Abbey who didn’t flinch. After passing, the dog’s owner looked back and said to me “You win.” When walking if I told Abbey to sit and stay while I kept going, she would still be there the next day if I didn’t call her sooner.
I taught her to open the gate to the basement by fastening a piece of wood to the railing holding the gate open leaving enough space for her nose to open the gate. Daily I shortened the piece of wood until the gate was closed and she had learned to reach between the slats and pull it open with her paw.
Often I would catch Abbey in a stealth walk lifting one paw at a time, while looking at me, to quietly sneak into the bedroom without rattling her tags to sleep with my wife, believing I was asleep in my chair and didn’t notice her.
She was most proud of herself when riding around town sitting up in the passenger seat in my wife’s Porsche with the top down.
Abbey, all those happy days will always be with us. jim and barbara
