We took a long time to decide to get a greyhound. My husband, a researcher by profession, and first time dog owner, wanted to find a breed that would adapt relatively easily to being with a working couple. I just wanted a dog, and to walk in Discovery Park. Greyhounds came out top, and we applied to our local rescue organization, Greyhound Pets Inc.
After being vetted with questionnaires and calls, they came out for a home visit, to make sure that our house was hound safe - and to check us out in person. Skye, recently returned due to illness in his first adoptive family, came along, I think to see how we would interact with him.
Let off his leash, he walked off, inspected the house for five minutes, came back and lay down with his head on James' foot. He was our dog - or rather we were his people - from that moment on.
It was a year before he did it again.
We had him for 10 years, and while he mellowed a little towards cats and raccoons (but only a little), and became terribly frail at the end, his strength of character never failed him, and his presence will be with us always.
