He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. -Unknown

Keva: A Vizsla Girl, April 1, 2001 – November 2, 2011

On her last day, she sequestered herself on the family bed, and just seemed to want to be alone, as she had for much of the last few months. A short time before our long walk across the street to the Vet (The Wonderful Dr. Spencer), she came out to the living room and slowly climbed up on the couch between us. After some very welcome (and many) face licks for both of us, she curled up into her signature donut shape, and quickly went into a deep sleep - dreaming …deeply…very animated leg and face twitches – her entire body was just FULL of life in this deep sleep. It was about an hour that she spent in the living room with us. Alternately sleeping peacefully and switching off to these vivid dreams complete with twitches and kicks! Chasing squirrels for sure, or just releasing…? This was a gift to us, as we had been so discouraged over the last few months, with our failures to encourage her to come out of the bedroom so we could spend time together on the couch, just to have and to hold and to comfort. When she woke, without fanfare, she slowly climbed off the couch, sauntering off to the bedroom to be alone.

One half-hour later we made that terrible walk across the street… She was always a challenging walker, pulling to the left, yanking to the right, or just forging straight ahead / lagging behind to check out that smell that only they can smell. This time, our last walk, being lead by Denise, she stopped to pee by her favorite tree, and immediately positioned herself between us as we crossed the street… Our sweet pea still had a wicked appetite! She scarfed down close to a dozen cookies from the treat drawer in our room at the Queen Anne Animal Clinic. We elected not to tell her older “brother” Kobi about that detail! The staff was awesome. We held our baby girl as she passed. We love her…we miss her.

We let her go on November 2, 2011, and today – November 24, 2011 (Thanksgiving), I can say I have cried every day since…and laughed about the funny stuff too… The day after she left, I began writing everything about her on paper. Physical stuff, weird habits, funny memories… I was so afraid I was going to forget the subtleties over time. I will never lose that paper (now two sides covered in random, raw, chicken scratch memories).

The total, unconditional love that we have for Keva will always be there, until the day that we pass. We miss her, we love her, and we hope to romp with her again some day… Pete, Denise, Kobi – November 24, 2011

In loving memory of our beloved Keva, and special thanks to Dr. Spencer and Staff at Queen Anne Animal Clinic, Seattle, WA.
