A Dog Named Scooter
We first acquired our Jack Russell in 1995. He had a slight under bite and a goofy fang that stuck out a little bit… I thought it gave him character. Although in hind sight, this dog didn’t need any more character.
Scooter as we named him would not tolerate any mice, spiders or flies in the house. The spiders were an easy catch, as was the occasional mouse in the garage. He’d chase a fly in the house for hours if he had to and finally catch it. He wouldn’t allow snakes in our yard or the neighbors either. Our neighbor barrowed him a couple times, when she spotted a garden snake in her yard and Little Scooter would root it out and kill it.
He’d come over to you and sit up on his hind legs when he wanted his belly scratched and loved the “sock” game. He’d come to me in the morning when getting dressed and stick his nose up in the air. I’d take one of my socks and pull it all the way over his snout to his ears and he’s use his front paws to pull it off and then stick his nose back up for the other one. He’d come to me and lay on his back and let me slide him back and forth, itching his back on the carpet, all the while with what looked like a smile on his face. I can just imagine how good that felt.
Scooter had 2 Lazy-Boy recliners of his own (one upstairs, one down), set up with his sleeping blankets. His outside doghouse (just in case the electronic pet door didn’t function) was handmade and roomy, with 6“ of insulation all around and a 6” covered foam pad to lay on, with Plexiglas swinging door… so, there was no doubt he was pampered loved in our home.
He was also my little garage buddy. When I’d go out to work on a project, it didn’t seem to matter the weather, Scooter would be right with me and spend hours outside poking around in the yard, or laying on the asphalt warming himself and snoozing.
An owner could go on and on about their beloved pet, but I’ll finish up with the last year of his life. Scooter had a stroke about a year ago and it took him several months to mostly recover from it. He never was quite the same after wards it seemed and due to his 16 year age, stairs and getting in/out of his chairs became a real chore, he also started to fall a lot while attempting to still negotiate them. We became afraid he would fall and break a leg and lay there all day with no one home. Loving little Scooter the way we did, this would not be acceptable… so finally the decision was made to have him put to sleep.
Scooter: May 1995 – February 2011… he was a very good boy ?
