Buddy III

A donation was made in memory of Buddy III by Doctors and Staff of the Amherst Animal Hospital on Oct 25, 2011.

Buddy III came into our lives in 2001, 5 days after I tragically ran over Buddy II. Although you can never replace a loving friend, you can fill the gap. We went to Opportunity to pick him up one evening and there were two Cockers left. He and his brother were running around both holding onto the same stick. They were about 3 months old and I guess they thought they were rebels because they wouldn't stop for us to pick them up. Finally, after catching them, we held them. We really wanted to take both of them home but we decided on just one because we already had Annie and two dogs were enough.
Bud was a low maintenance dog for about 6 years until he had to have knee surgery in 2007. Dr. Peretti operated on both knees at the same time and Bud made it through that with no problems. As far as I remember I believe that was the first double knee surgery Dr. Peretti had done and he always was so impressed with Bud's recovery and the fact that he had no set backs.
In March of 2009 we found out Bud had cancer, we were devastated because he was such a good boy and we loved him so much and we didn't want to lose him. We opted for Chemo therapy to try and hang on to him for a little longer. After going through 25 weeks of Chemo Bud was in remission and came through it all like a trooper, with very little complications.
Then, once again, this spring I found a lump in Buds throat. The cancer had come back after 2 years. You wouldn't even know anything was wrong with Buddy because he was always just happy to be here. Us and Dr. Peretti considered him a miracle dog because he always seemed to bounce back and never really showed any signs of illness. We chose to try Chemo again. He went through 24 weeks of Chemo and occasionally had to be given "anitbionics" for a high white blood count. He had 1 treatment left and on October 4, 2011 he went into the hospital with pneumonia. Dr. Peretti called me that day after work and said Bud was doing better and we probably would be able to take him home in a couple of days after they loaded him up with "antibionics" and got him feeling a little better.
I was getting ready for bed that evening and thinking about going and visiting Bud after work the next day when Dr. Peretti called me to tell me Bud had passed away from a possible blood clot. Of all the things our little guy had gone through, to lose him that way was a shocker. He was so loved by everybody. He is missed by his mama Vera, his best friend and dad Leonard, his son Willie, his granddaughter Friday, his daughter-in-law Lady, his "step sister" Sara and his bird brother Kelly.
