Sierra
A donation was made in memory of Sierra by the doctors and staff at Valley Veterinary Clinic on Jan 28, 2022.
Sierra was one of a kind . A Border Collie/Wolf mix; but more than that, she was all heart. ♥️ We rescued her from the SCRAPS Spokane shelter when she was just six months old. And right from the start, she was incredibly smart and intuitive , and very devoted to us.
Friendly to people and other animals - but also very discerning when we needed her to protect . While on walks, people always came up - Both young and old— asking to pet her and wanting to know about her or to introduce their dog to her. She was such a people magnet.
She loved the water, and would watch boats on the lake and river with yearning — and often jump in after them, as if imagining they needed to be towed back to shore. She would do the same with us. Regularly, whenever we went swimming - she would circle swim around us trying to herd us back to the “safety” of shore —ever the vigilant one. Her border collie herding instinct was strong.
She grew up with the boys these last 15 years, playing always playing. Often she would steal basketball passes from them & their friends and incredibly actually dribble the ball a few bounces on the driveway — same with stealing 🏈 and ⚽️- running off with them in her mouth — even sometimes puncturing those in the process. 😊
She was a fan of watching 📺 and would watch entire films with us — totally engaged— even foreign subtitled pieces . No idea what she was thinking 😊—but I just know we got as much pleasure, if not more, just watching her, as we did the screen.
She loved our holiday traditions and indulged us with great enthusiasm. Doing Easter egg hunts (special bone filled ones for her) every year with the boys at our house— and each Christmas morning diligently ripping open her wrapped bone presents the boys put in her stocking.
There were few family times she missed. She was always there— and when we rarely left her behind, it was very reluctantly. Car rides and walks were her favorite, and we took her with us everywhere. She was just a member of the family.
She’s been such a huge part of our lives. Especially for John and I these last 5 or 6 years as the boys spent more and more time away from home, and we got to morph into our own rhythm & routine with her. Walks at Manito were never without her— seated at outdoor cafes with her at our feet . Walks by the river, or trails in Sandpoint — sunrise or sunset . And the photo ops were endless, as you can tell by the many photos posted here of her over the years— as if she were our 3rd child.
As we look back and feel the huge void she has left in our lives, we can’t help but also feel so incredibly thankful to God for having blessed us all these years with such a wonderful friend, companion and protector. We love you Sierra - we will miss you forever. ♥️
