Ruby
A donation was made in memory of Ruby by Leah Panganiban on Mar 26, 2024.
My sweet girl Ruby came into my life at a time of huge transition. She was my support, my friend, my comfort - and I was hers. It's been a year without her and I still think about her and miss her every single day. I put this together in the weeks after she crossed the bridge and I'm so glad I did. I can re-read now without the edges hurting quite so much.
Things Ruby loved • Me. Most of all, always, me. • Her pack, particularly Sophie, Bill, and Nate. • And Leah gets a mention too - she lived her best life when Leah was watching her. Outings, snuggles... her first puppacino! • When I came home no matter how long I had been gone • Cheese • Sun warming her beautiful grey body and face • Morning hellos and scratches • Playing tug with Bill • Scones • Rolling around on the grass at Gasworks park. Goose poop be damned • Riding in the car • Hanging out in the camper, especially up in the bed • Licking bath or lake water off our legs • Going to Pacific Inn - the land of French fries and potential bacon • Let’s be honest. Food. All food, any food. EXCEPT salad or any kind of green leaves. Veggies were great - carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes... but try giving her a leaf and ptui. • Just being with us. Anywhere.
Things I don’t want to forget • How she got so excited to see me, without fail, every morning. Mornings were the BEST time. • How much she drooled waiting for a bite of scone • How she lay fully open on her back while I rubbed her belly, pink with white hair and some dots of grey visible on her belly skin • How she pulled herself off the couch, dragging her back legs behind her • How her paws smelled like corn chips • How she would kiss my whole face • How she would lift her paw to get the leash out from under it when I just said “paw” • How she would seek out the sunny spots on the couch, moving as they moved • Her barks and snores in her sleep, sometimes sounding like a cartoon character. So glad I have video so I can listen to her. • How she would get a squeaky toy in her mouth and chew and chew to make it squeak. I think she did it in purpose sometimes just to annoy. ❤️ • How she would come into the kitchen while Bill cooked hoping for dropped food but would very nicely go to her blue mat when told to, and sit there watching him cook. • Her velvety velvety soft ears. The softest, velvetiest. • What it felt to kiss her on her sweet head, to sniff her, to rub scratch her ears. • Morning sneezies... upon waking up at least 2 or 3, and with full-body force. If she was next to me in her bed, I’d rub her nose to help them pass. • Her full-body stretches. • Those mornings I could coax her into bed and under the covers. Sometimes she’d give me the butt to snuggle. But on some magical mornings she would nestle in, my little spoon. Then, if I was really lucky, Bill would roll over and make me his little spoon. I am not sure I will ever experience such pure contentment as I did in those times of being sandwiched between those two loves of my life. • When she would come in from being out in the rain and patiently let me dry each paw, then towel dry her belly and back and head. Depending on how wet she was, this could induce zoomies. • She didn’t need many baths, but oh my god how soft and sweet-smelling she was after having one. It was magical. She wasn’t the biggest fan of the bath, though she tolerated it once I wrested her in. Once out and toweled and released, zoomies ensued, with lots of rubbing on the couch and floor.
Things I called her • Rubicita • Rubicita Mia • Lupita • Lupita Mía • Puppitita • Rubyloo • Rubyloohoo • Rubytoots • Rubybutt • Rubealoo • Rubinella • Rubemeister • Rubalooey • Baby girl • Wigglebutt girl • Rubenelzinubi and Rubechemali • Couch hippo • Beautiful girl • Poopybutt dog/girl • Pupster/pupstress • Poopster/poopstress • Puppy girl • Pooperdoop • The most annoying dog in the world • Pupperdup • Sweetie girl • Loober Lu • Lu la li • Puppalooey • Rubatoots • Sweet Ruby • Ms Ruby • Ms Pup • Ms Thang • Girlie girl • Sweetatoots • Sweetie poop
Things I sang to her • Good morning good morning to you-oo • Lupita Mía • Ruby, Rubecita, pup of the wild frontier • When I first said I loved only you, Ruby, and you said you loved only me • Ooooooh snuggle puppy of mine...
Things Ruby disliked • Fireworks. 💯 most-hated thing. So much that getting out of town (especially away from the marina) on fireworks holidays was a priority • Thunder was a close second to fireworks, Even hard loud rain worried her. • Dobie and Murphy • Bath - she would tolerate once it became inevitable, but she was super happy when it was over • The vet especially after she had her teeth cleaned. I took to parking in different places so that I didn’t have to physically push her out of the car. Though she was always super well-behaved and enjoyed the treats. • Any green leafy veg • She wasn’t a water dog at all. The one time I took her on the paddleboard was a trial of endurance and she was very happy to get off.
