Our barn had gone through the EHV-1 virus and we lost 7 horses and had many, many sick horses. Two of my other horses were nearly lost. It was a tragic time!
A young lady who had heard about the outbreak and loss, offered her horse to someone who lost a horse. She was leaving for college in Europe and wouldn't be able to take her horse with her.
Therefore, Lucky aka In Luck We Trust aka Kingston appeared. He's a beautiful Chestnut TB with a funny demeanor but some serious quirks. As the stories about him started to unfold, we learned he had some mistreatment in the past, which made him unpredictable. You had to be very careful about not getting kicked or bitten. I spent 4 years working with him, to get him loving and sweet and mostly he was, especially with kissing spine. But this past summer, he damaged a nerve in his face with the extreme heat we had. Unfortunately he just kept deteriorating from there. He would get turned out at night, to be out of the sun and light, he shook his head badly, we treated and did all we could for him, but he started falling down by himself and with a rider on. It was time to say goodbye as he could not be trusted in a retirement situation.
I was told long ago that naming a horse Lucky was a bad omen. I felt his registered name begged for it. And while all of the tragic things that happened to him, I thought maybe he isn't so lucky and I created this for him. But what I realized is he was Lucky to have me in the end, I was Lucky to have known him, he created and taught patience to his riders, he taught them how to be effective, quiet riders, while we did everything to help him, keep him comfortable and strong and make him the sweet boy, he ended up being. So, we were all Lucky to have known him. His stall stands empty and we are sad but we are grateful as well. He was one in a million!! RIP Lucky, we miss you! 2/27/2005 - 11/1/2021
